CSIM Annual Meeting 2024

October 16-19, 2024 | Hamilton, ON

CIMUS Ultrasound Workshop on Ascites, Pleural Effusion, and Vessel Assessment

Wednesday, October 16, 2024, 7:00am-12:00pm

In this interactive workshop, participants will learn to acquire and interpret ultrasound views relevant to the performance of paracentesis and thoracentesis, including confirmation of ascites, pleural effusion, how to use Doppler to assess for vasculature, and common pitfalls. Maximal time will be devoted to direct hands-on training on standardized patients with direct supervision from instructors including internationally-known point-of-care ultrasound experts. The learner to instructor ratio is capped at 3:1 to maximize learning.

Registration fee: $595 + HST

Hands-on stations will address the following objectives:

  • Use proper Doppler settings for identifying low flow vessels.
  • Apply Doppler properly to identify intercostal vessels and the inferior epigastric artery.
  • Describe and apply appropriate sonographic technique in identifying and in ruling out significant pleural effusion at the bedside.
  • Describe and apply the appropriate sonographic technique in identifying and in ruling out significant intra-abdominal fluid at the bedside.

Accreditation Statement:
The CIMUS Ultrasound Workshop on Ascites, Pleural Effusion, and Vessel Assessment is an Accredited Simulation Activity (Section 3) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification Program of The Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada, and approved by Canadian Society of Internal Medicine.  You may claim a maximum of 5 hours (credits are automatically calculated).

Please note:

  • Participants MUST have basic relevant ultrasound physics knowledge prior to attending the workshop.
  • Pre-reading material will be provided and MUST be reviewed prior to the course.
  • Pre-registration is required.
  • Available only to registrants of the CSIM Annual Meeting 2024. Registration is limited to ensure interactivity and maximal hands-on experience.
