Dr. Karen Okrainec
2022 New Investigator Award Recipient
Dr. Karen Okrainec is a General Internal Medicine Physician who practices at University Health Network and affiliated as a Scientist at ICES, OpenLab and IHPME at the University of Toronto. Born and raised in Gatineau, Quebec, she first completed her graduate degree in Epidemiology and Biostatistics at McGill University before starting her medical training in the francophone stream of Universite d’Ottawa. She later completed her Internal Medicine training at McGill University then a postdoctoral fellowship at ICES in Toronto. Her research over the last 7 years has focused on system gaps for patients transitioning in and out of hospital by improving patient experience and post-discharge outcomes. She is supported by a team of investigators, graduate students, patient and family advisors and policy users thanks to an Early Researcher Award and Mak Chair in General Internal Medicine. Dr. Okrainec by day, her alter ego is as a Supermom of 3 little kids.
