Learning Objectives
- Better understand the symptoms, presentations and underlying mechanisms in Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS).
- Describe how POTS is diagnosed and which tests can be helpful.
- Describe the association with other diseases and when to suspect POTS in them.
- Have knowledge of current and future treatments used in patients with POTS.

About Dr. Juan Guzman
Dr. Guzman is an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine at McMaster University and the Director of the Syncope and Autonomic Disorders Unit affiliated with the Arrhythmia Service at Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS).
After receiving his MD degree from the Universidad Industrial de Santander, in Colombia in 2000, he moved to Canada in 2004 and joined
the Syncope and Autonomic Disorders Unit at McMaster University as a Clinical/Research Fellow. He has collaborated on several research projects related mostly to the pathophysiological mechanism of vasovagal syncope as well as Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), Neurogenic Orthostatic Hypotension (NOH), Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS) and Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS). He has also collaborated in Randomized Control
Trials assessing non-pharmacological and pharmacological therapies for the management of syncope, and haso participated in different mechanistic and physiological studies in the area of chronic orthostatic intolerance.
In 2007, Dr. Guzman was accepted into the Internal Medicine residency program at McMaster University and received a certification as an Internal Medicine Specialist. During the same time, he pursued and obtained a master’s degree in Health Research Methodology also at McMaster University.
