Lauréat d’un Prix en reconnaissance d’éminents services rendus en médecine interne générale
Dr Edward Etchells MD MSc FRCPC

Dr. Edward Etchells graduated from the University of Toronto in 1987.  He thanks Dr. Allan Detsky for hiring him in 1992 as a GIM fellow.  He is currently the head of the Division of General Internal Medicine at Women’s College Hospital, a staff physician with the Division of General Internal Medicine at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Center, and a professor of medicine at the University of Toronto.  He is an attending physician at the Women’s College Hospital GIM Acute Ambulatory Care Unit and the Sunnybrook Health Sciences GIM Clinical Teaching Unit.

He received the 2022 Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada (AFMC) Clinical Teaching Award and the 2020 Professional Association of Residents of Ontario (PARO) Teaching Award.  He has authored 63 peer reviewed articles and 8 book chapters including JAMA Rational Clinical Examination reviews on Systolic Murmurs, Diastolic Murmurs and Syncope, and foundational papers on Medication Reconciliation.  He sends thanks to Drs. Dre Vicky Tagalakis MD MSc FRCPC

Dr. Vicky Tagalakis is Associate Chair of the Department of Medicine at McGill University and Physician-in-Chief of Medicine at the Jewish General Hospital in Montreal. She is a Research Scientist in the Centre of Epidemiology and Community of Studies, Lady Davis Institute for Medical Research, Jewish General Hospital. Her clinical interest is in the diagnosis and management of venous thrombotic disorders and her principal research interests focus primarily on the epidemiology of venous thrombosis primarily in cancer patients.

She has held over $10 million in grants and authored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications. She co-leads the CanVECTOR Population and Health Services Research Platform, a national network that uses large scale administrative databases to conduct population-based studies on quality of care and effectiveness related to the management of venous thromboembolism. She was the Director of the General Internal Medicine residency program at McGill from 2003-2016. During her tenure, she led transformative changes in the training program with the establishment of a two-year residency program at McGill in 2003 and helped lead the establishment of the national standards of training for the specialty of General Internal Medicine in 2015.

Between 2016 and June 2023, she led the academic mission of the McGill University Division of General Internal Medicine which includes over sixty highly accomplished faculty members from across three hospitals, comprising of national and international renowned researchers, teachers and educators, quality improvement leaders, and clinician innovators. She has been recognized for her teaching and mentorship having received the Jewish General Hospital Department of Medicine Teacher of the Year award and the McGill Department of Medicine Mentor of the Year award

Dr François Lamontagne

Dr. Lamontagne holds a Master’s degree in pharmacology and another in health research methodology. He was recruited as a critical care specialist and clinician-scientist by the Université de Sherbrooke and the Centre de recherche du CHU de Sherbrooke in 2010.

His research activities include clinical trials of resuscitation interventions (65 Trial – PMID 32049269, LOVIT Trial – PMID 35704292), trustworthy clinical guidelines, and health systems research. In 2020, he launched the Canadian Clinical Research Network to improve clinical research capacity and coordination across Canada by collecting and reporting information on the conduct of clinical research within the Canadian health research ecosystem.

Dr Amol Verma

Amol Verma is a physician and scientist at St. Michael’s Hospital, Unity Health Toronto. He is the Temerty Professor of AI Research and Education in Medicine and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine and the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation at the University of Toronto. Amol co-founded and co-leads GEMINI, one of Canada’s largest hospital data and analytics networks, which includes 30 hospitals in Ontario.

He is a member of the Council of Canadian Academies Expert Panel on Health Data Sharing, a Provincial Clinical Lead for Quality Improvement in General Internal Medicine with Ontario Health, and Vice Chair of the Researcher Council of the Digital Research Alliance of Canada.

Dr Justin Boyle, General Internal Medicine Subspecialty Resident, University of Toronto

Justin Boyle is a fourth-year resident in the General Internal Medicine Subspecialty Program at the University of Toronto. He completed his medical school training at the University of Toronto and his core Internal Medicine residency at Queen’s University. He is also the manager for the Rounds Table Podcast, which is hosted through Healthy Debate. He is interested in medical education research, health equity, curriculum creation and implementation. When not in the hospital, he is spending time with his dog, Ollie.​

Dre Flavia Kessler Borges

Dr. Flavia Kessler Borges is an Internist and Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine, and in the Perioperative Care Division at McMaster University. She is also a Scientist at the Population Health Research Institute, Hamilton, Canada. Dr. Borges undertook her Masters in Health Sciences, and her PhD in Cardiovascular Sciences in Brazil. She undertook a post-doctorate and a clinical Perioperative Vascular fellowship under the direction of Dr. PJ Devereaux at McMaster University. Her research is focused on perioperative cardiac biomarkers, and perioperative strategies to improve patient important outcomes in surgical patients, specially in hip fracture patients. She holds an Internal Career Research Award from Hamilton Health Sciences, a CIHR and NIH large grants as the Principal Investigators of the HIP ATTACK-2 trial.

Dre Jorin LindenSmith

Dr. Jorin LindenSmith is a general internist based in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Originally from Calgary, she left for McGill University and then continued further east to Dalhousie. The magnetism of the ocean proved too strong to resist and she has been in practice in the Halifax area for almost twenty years now, raising three children and numerous dogs along the way.

Dr. LindenSmith has a varied practice in community-based General Internal Medicine, Critical Care, and outpatient Allergy and Immunology with a strong interest in medical education and administration.

Dre Stephanie Pipe

Dr. Stephanie Pipe is a subspecialty resident in General Internal Medicine at Dalhousie University.  She completed medical school at Queen’s University, and core Internal Medicine training at Dalhousie University.  She has special interests in Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing and Obesity Medicine.  She is excited to embark on a career in community Internal Medicine in the near future.

Michael Ke Wang MD FRCPC

Dr. Michael Ke Wang is a general internist, perioperative care physician, and PhD Candidate in Health Research Methodology at McMaster University. Dr. Wang’s research interests include perioperative medicine and perioperative atrial fibrillation. His educational interests include resident wellness and point of care ultrasound.

Dr Sachin V. Pasricha

Dr. Sachin Pasricha is a graduating internal medicine resident entering nephrology fellowship at the University of Toronto. Sachin’s clinical interest is hypertension. He is working with Hypertension Canada on their Device Recommendation Committee and organization of the 2023 Canadian Hypertension Congress. The CSIM Health Promotion Scholarship will support an advocacy initiative he launched. The initiative, which has garnered support from 5 national organizations, 7 academic hospitals, and 38 hypertension specialists, advocates for the Canada Revenue Agency to list validated blood pressure monitoring devices as a medical expense eligible for a tax benefit to improve appropriate home blood pressure monitoring.
