Accrediting a Program with the CSIM

The CSIM is a fully accredited provider under the Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. The CSIM CPD subcommittee is composed of physicians with an in-depth knowledge of the MOC program and with years of experience in both planning and accrediting CME programs for several different specialties.

To learn more about accrediting a program with the CSIM, please review the CSIM Guidelines for Approval of CPD Activities.

Activities submitted for approval under Section 1 must meet the requirements for either Option A or B:

Option A: Activities planned by a physician organization or medical organization may be approved without being co-developed.
Option B: Activities planned by non-physician or non-medical organizations must be co-developed by a physician organization, medical organization or an accredited provider.

If you do not meet the criteria in Option A or B, your application cannot be considered; the program is ineligible for Section 1 credits.  Other options for obtaining credit exist for CPD activities; please refer to the Maintenance of Certification information on the Royal College website.

Option A: Are you a Physician Organization (PO)?

If you are not a PO, proceed to Option B.

The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada requires that activities must be planned by a physician organization to be eligible for accreditation.

The Royal College definition of a physician organization is: A not-for-profit group of health professionals with a formal governance structure, accountable to and serving, among others, its specialist physician members through CPD, provision of healthcare, and/or research. The rationale behind the “physician organization” definition is to ensure that CPD/CME is being developed “by the profession, for the profession”. For more information on eligibility and inclusions, please click here.

If you are uncertain whether your organization meets the definition of a physician organization, please contact the Royal College CPD Department directly (at the contact information below) to confirm your status before submitting your application. (By telephone: 613-730-2587; toll-free 1-800-668-3740, ext. 587 or by Email: cpd-accreditation@royalcollege.ca)

In order to give us the opportunity to adequately review your program and make any suggestions for improvement, applications should be received twelve weeks in advance of the event and preferably before the final program has been printed.

An application submitted for consideration must be accompanied by the non-refundable application deposit. If the program is approved, this fee will be applied to the full accreditation fee.

Please note that if the application fails to meet any / all requirements, including eligibility as a Physician Organization, the application deposit is not refundable.

Note that there can be no mention of “accreditation pending”. Accreditation cannot be mentioned until the program is fully reviewed and approved for accreditation.

The CSIM’s ability to accept applications for review is limited; the Society does not guarantee acceptance of all requests.

Option B: Co-development

If you are not a PO but are hoping to co-develop a program with the CSIM (the accredited provider), the CSIM must be involved in the planning process from the beginning. This includes planning, the needs assessment, committee selection, speaker selection, program design, implementation and evaluation of the program.

If you would like to co-develop with the CSIM, please call the CSIM Office at 613-422-5977 / TF: 1-855-893-CSIM (2746).
